From Ancient Marvels to Riverside Bliss: Hampi’s Allure in Two Unforgettable Days

In the previous part of our Hampi travel series, we shared our adventurous drive from Bangalore to Hampi. Now, let’s delve into the heart of this historic city and uncover its fascinating secrets.

We had chosen Hotel Mailigi in Hosapete as our base, situated only 30 minutes away from all the main attractions of Hampi. This decision was wise, as finding good stay options within the main historic area proved to be quite challenging. While there are a few luxury accommodations available, they tend to be expensive, leaving budget travelers with limited choices.

Day 1: Immersing in History

Virupaksha Temple
                 Virupaksha Temple

Our first day began with a visit to the iconic Virupaksha Temple. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands as a testimony to the rich Indian history and architecture. As we wandered through the intricate carvings and towering gopuram, we were enchanted by the stories depicted on the walls. Interesting trivia we learned was that the temple has been functioning continuously since its construction in the 7th century, making it one of the oldest functioning temples in India.

Next, we marveled at the Giant Ganesha and Lord Narasimha statues, both carved from a single stone. Sadly, these statues suffered from the pillaging of invaders, and the Ganesha statue is now without its original head. The craftsmanship of these sculptures left us in awe, reflecting the exquisite skill of the artisans of that era.

The Badavilinga Temple was our next stop, where we found an awe-inspiring Shivlinga submerged in water. It’s considered a must-see for its spiritual significance and unique setting.

Throughout the day, we explored other attractions like the Shree Vijaya Vitthala Temple, Elephant Stables, Lotus Mahal, and the Queen’s Bathhouse. Each of these sites bore witness to Hampi’s glorious past and left us humbled by the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire.

Mesmerizing Sunset from Matanga Hill

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Matanga Hill for a breathtaking sunset experience. The climb to the top was a bit challenging, with a series of stairs to conquer, but the effort was well worth it. The view from the hill was nothing short of spectacular, as we witnessed the sun painting the sky with vibrant hues while casting a golden glow over the ancient ruins below. It was a moment of pure tranquility, and we felt deeply connected to the rich history of Hampi.

Day 2: Embracing Nature’s Beauty

After exploring Hampi’s historical marvels, we decided to immerse ourselves in its natural beauty on the second day.

Relaxing by the Tungabhadra River:

We spent a peaceful morning by the Tungabhadra River, enjoying the serene atmosphere and the soothing sound of the flowing water. Some of us opted for a coracle boat ride, which provided a unique perspective of the landscape and allowed us to see the riverside ruins from a different angle.

Hiking to Anjaneya Hill: The afternoon called for an adventurous trek to Anjaneya Hill, leading us to the Hanuman Temple at its summit. The panoramic views of the surrounding landscape were breathtaking, making the hike entirely worthwhile.

Coracle Boat Rides: In the evening, we indulged in another coracle boat ride on the Tungabhadra River. Gliding through the gentle waters, we were captivated by the peaceful ambiance and the picturesque scenery that surrounded us.

Savoring Hampi’s Local Cuisine: To conclude our Hampi journey, we treated ourselves to the flavors of Karnataka at local eateries. From spicy Bisi Bele Bath to the delectable Mysore Pak, our taste buds were treated to an array of delightful dishes.

As we bid farewell to Hampi, we carried back memories of a city steeped in history and blessed with natural wonders. Its ancient ruins and breathtaking landscapes left a lasting impression on our souls, reminding us of the timeless charm of this enchanting destination. Until our next adventure, Hampi shall remain a treasured gem in our hearts.
