Travel is supposed to be an escape, a break from the monotony of daily life. My wife and I had envisioned our island-hopping and diving trip across Thailand’s serene islands—Koh Tao and Koh Samui—as just that: a dream vacation filled with turquoise waters, golden sands, and adventure. What we hadn’t planned for was a relentless series of roadblocks that would turn our trip into something resembling a survival reality show.
The Trouble Begins
The first sign that the universe had different plans for us came as soon as we landed at the picturesque Koh Samui airport. We were eager to soak in the laid-back island vibe when we got the news—our suitcase had been left behind in Bangkok. “It will be delivered in the afternoon,” they assured us. So much for the seamless start.

Undeterred, we pushed forward, boarding a speedboat to Koh Phangan. That’s when the sea turned against us. The waters were rough—so rough that the boat slammed violently against the waves, each impact jarring our bodies like we were trapped in a malfunctioning roller coaster. It was only 25 minutes, but it felt like an eternity.
When we finally reached Koh Phangan, we were supposed to switch to a larger catamaran for the next leg of our journey. That’s when disaster struck.
A Fall, A Blackout & A Shaken Wife
While transferring to the bigger boat, I misstepped and fell hard onto the pier. I blacked out for about 30 seconds. When I regained consciousness, my wife was screaming, desperately calling for help. My head pounded, my body ached, and I could barely register what had happened. I was quickly given first aid, some painkillers, and ushered onto the larger boat.

If the pain from the fall wasn’t bad enough, the sea had another test in store. The three-hour boat ride to Koh Tao was pure torture. The catamaran swayed aggressively with the turbulent waters, and the scene around me was like something out of a disaster movie. Passengers were vomiting, some fainted, and I, nursing my fresh wounds, clutched onto whatever dignity I had left.
Finally, we reached Koh Tao—a breathtakingly beautiful and tranquil island. The irony? We had chosen it for diving, but my injuries meant I had to stay away from the water. Five stitches and a strict warning from the doctor ensured I wouldn’t be experiencing the island as we had originally planned.

A Moment of Peace… and Another Hurdle
After three days of taking it easy, we were skeptical about our return boat ride, but the gods showed mercy—the sea was calm, and the journey was smooth. We returned to Koh Samui and checked into a charming French resort. Renting a scooter seemed like the best way to explore the island. The next three days were bliss—soul-soothing massages, mouthwatering food, and mesmerizing landscapes.

Then, just as we were about to leave for the airport, the scooter broke down in the middle of a highway. We tried everything—checking for a mechanic, seeking help—but for 25 agonizing minutes, we were stranded. With time running out, leaving the scooter wasn’t an option. Then, as if scripted by fate, a mechanic appeared out of nowhere. He gave the scooter a quick charge, and we were back on the road, racing against time to make our flight.

Bangkok’s Last Surprise
Thinking the worst was behind us, we reached Bangkok for the final leg of our journey. But Thailand had one last curveball waiting. On the last day, I lost my secondary phone. Panic set in as I retraced my steps, searching every corner of the hotel. Nothing. Then, a memory surfaced—I had left it in a cab while heading to a mall. All hope seemed lost.
But just when I had resigned myself to the loss, we got a call. The woman cab driver had found the phone and, in a rare act of kindness, handed it over to the mall’s security. A mix of relief and gratitude washed over me. Maybe, just maybe, the universe wasn’t entirely against us.
The Takeaway? Expect the Unexpected
Looking back, our Thailand trip was nothing short of a wild ride—quite literally. From lost luggage to terrifying boat rides, an unfortunate fall, a broken-down scooter, and a misplaced phone, we faced it all. But in the end, we survived, laughed, and walked away with stories to last a lifetime.
After all, what happens in Thailand… stays in Thailand.
